Libya’s energy sector has been majorly relying on fossil fuels with renewable sources having minimal participation. The government subsidized the prices of energy from these sources, therefore making it difficult for renewable energy to be looked at as an alternative source (Fahmi & Sutton, 2006). The establishment of the Ministry of Electricity and renewable energy is showing steps that are being made towards including renewable energy and energy efficiency into the national agenda.

The renewable energy authority of Libya (REAOL) had set up some foundation work that was mainly theoretical. They had come up with ambitious goals that have not been included in the final legal framework goals. REAOL constitutes of mainly engineers as workers and it started as a solar center within Gecol before being upgraded to a department within Gecol and later separated from it (Burnley, 2007). Gecol is owned by the state and is responsible for the generation of power, transmission, and distribution. REAOL is supervised by Peoples Committee for Electricity and Gas (RCREEE 2012). The national oil cooperation (NOC) also holds a monopoly in this sector. Donors such as GIZ are initiating projects throughout the country with REAOL in charge of the program.

The quantity and composition of food-generated waste in Tripoli Libya are important for the overall management and planning of the household waste management infrastructure in the city. Household solid generation waste contains 36.5% organic matter, 32.5% such as paper, glass and plastics, and metals. The daily generation rate and quantity are similar to that of African and Arabian countries. Tripoli has limited municipal waste and lacks sanitary landfills (Moftah et. al, 2016)

There are two different terms (food loss 4 food waste) that have been agreed upon by the UNEP and FAO stakeholders through the UN’s Save Food Initiative; Food loss is simply the decrease in either quantity or quality during production or distribution. Food waste is the removal of food from the supply chain. The food might be spoiled or expired. There are some avoidable food wastes that can be eaten but are lost during consumption.
