Extract of sample "Diversity at the Workplace"

Putting in place mechanisms that promote diversity in a workplace ensures that employees have ample opportunities for personal growth. This further stimulates exposure to new perspectives and ideas pertaining to different organizational practices. Subsequently, culturally diverse workmates are in a better position of overcoming subconscious barriers, which creates workers that are well-rounded societal members.Improving diversity in a workplace must begin at the top level, which entails widening the recruitment base using a wide range of recruiting vehicles that appeal to all groups of job seekers including the minority.

This is critical in ensuring that the organization does not miss an opportunity to have a wide base of ideas and approaches. This can be reinforced by offering training on a number of issues such as language, in addition to clarifying the benefits associated with diversity. As a whole, this process will create a sense of well-being for the workers. In the quest to promote diversity at the workplace, there are a number of legislative acts and federal statutes that protect employees at the workplace.

Among the most common laws include the Equal Pay Act (EPA) that forbids sex-based pay discrimination for men and women working in similar conditions. In addition, there is the Age Discrimination in Employment Act (ADEA) that bars discrimination against older employees. Similarly, there is the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA), which ensures that expectant women and other workers with critical health conditions are not discriminated against. Subsequently, the government enacted the Genetic Information Nondiscrimination Act (GINA) that protects employees against discriminating on the basis of their genetic information.

Although all these laws have equal weight in championing diversity at the workplace, I am in support of the federal Employment Nondiscrimination (ENDA) that if passed would prohibit discrimination based on sexual orientation at the workplace. With the legalization of homosexuality across various states, many organizations are yet to embrace individuals with different sexual orientations. Such organizations have often shunned homosexuals and transsexuals without considering the vast talent and capabilities that they may possess.

Post 1 commentsI concur with the idea that diversity in the workplace goes hand in hand with change. As a matter of fact, accepting diversity implies admitting certain interpersonal and intrapersonal changes to accommodate new concepts and misconceptions from other individuals. By so doing, this serves as an inherent drive for the workers to transfer the positive attitude to their assigned organizational duties.Post 2 comments.I commend the obvious admission that all human beings have an innate tendency to favor others of the same kind.

However, prior to launching the casual events, the employer also needs to exercise diversity by expanding his recruitment base, otherwise, there will be no diversity to socialize.
