Williams (2014) asserts in her article that, it is an occasional misconception that success in careers is dependent on skills and education. However, education and skills can only complement an employee with exceptional emotional intelligence. Over the years, researches made on determinants of career success have constantly cited intelligence as a mandatory factor. Studies on intelligence have expanded to include emotional intelligence.

Williams (2014) points out that a study conducted in 2006 by 250 executives from different countries came to the conclusion that the most important career success determinants were interpersonal competence, social awareness, and self-awareness. The three factors are elements of emotional intelligence.             The central purpose of the article is to develop a positive perception of the importance of emotional intelligence in HRM practices.

In addition, Williams (2014) seeks to shun the traditional approach to determining success based on education and physical skills. The most important information provided in the article is that; the ability of an employee to display the elements of emotional intelligence at an exceptional level increases the suitability to succeed. Consequently, organizational culture should strive to create an employee culture that develops their emotional intelligence.
