The article written by Kumar (2012) proffered pertinent issues relative to the effect of Business Intelligence (BI), defined as “computer-based techniques used in identifying, extracting and analyzing business data, such as sales revenue by-products and/or departments, or by associated costs and incomes” (p. 358) in decision-making processes generally required from firms that belong to the Indian Telecom industry. Through comprehensively presenting the internal and external factors that primarily impact telecom organizations, the applications allegedly offered by BI systems include analytical tools that significantly assist decision-makers in matching resources to the demands of the customers.

Reason for Choosing the Article: The reason for selecting this article is the applicability of using technologically updated design systems that facilitate and assist in the decision-making process of contemporary organizations, particularly those that are included in the telecom industry, one of the fastest evolving industries today. The benefits of using BI systems were deemed instrumental in gaining a competitive advantage and in sustaining profitable success.Application to the Course: The principles of using analytical tools and techniques in the process of making relevant decisions are clearly expounded; as well as emphasizing that there is a need to scan the internal and external environment of the organization to consider factors that significantly impinge on current and future operations.

The viability of integrating elements of the BI systems in the telecom organizations’ process design has been established to justify its applications despite apparent high costs and noted long implementation cycles, as eminent challenges. What was Learned: The new information learned is that managers must take a proactive stance in discerning the availability of technological applications and systems that would assist decision-makers in determining the effects of both internal and external factors in their current operations.

As such, there is a need to be constantly apprised and abreast with applications that could benefit the organization in the long run.
