Ethical Scenario Analysis The Scenario A corporation is considering planning a plant site in his These insinuate plant site are for homeless people for providing temporary residence for their protection. The main intent of plant site is to protect the vulnerable population due to the dreadful impact of homelessness. Homeless shelter can help to reduce the environmental and ethical impact on the community. The proposed plan will be affected, if homeless shelter is moved to other location. Matthew Jones is a reporter of a large daily newspaper organization. Matthew is concerned about the homeless people as he senses the destructive and isolation experiences faced by those people. He knows that homeless people are always in fight for their life due to the lack of nutrition, diseases and untreated medical conditions. Matthew jones gave the assignment to the James Young. The main intention of Matthew was to make a story on the relevance of sentiment in understanding the impact of homeless on people and how providing shelter that can help them. The pictures should be taken before the final proposed plan as it should provide the ultimate decision. James Young went to the site to take pictures of the site but faced rejection. Homeless people ignore to cooperate with James. As some of them covered their faces and some other homeless either walked away. Deadline pressure of taking pictures forced Young to call some of his friends and take their pictures on behalf of homeless people. At first time, city editor was impressed by the pictures but eventually he gets to know the truth. City editor was in serious ethical dilemma of either overlooking the issue to save the shelter or severely reprimand Young for disciplinary matter. This scenario relates the conflict of interest between the employee James Young and his head city editor. Analysis Deontology ethical frame is one approach that could have been taken by city editor in case of ethical dilemma (Hilner, 2000). Deontology ethical theory deals with the nature of duty and right action (BBC, 2014). But without, value of motives and desirability of any act committed. Deontology is to judge the morality of an action but based on the actions devotion towards rules and regulations (Cremer, 2012). The principle of deontology is that, irrespective of the circumstances and situation individuals are expected to say the truth. This ethical frame puts special emphasis on the relationship between the morality and duty of individuals.City editor is in an ethical dilemma whether to overlook the issue or reveal the truth (Smith, 2004). But in this scenario, City editor has to follow the deontology ethical frame which is to reveal the truth. The truth is the best way to sustain the organization (Lozano, 2001). He should follow the rule for the benefit of the company. If he had overlooked the issue then that would have benefited his newspaper and save the story of homeless shelter. But the principle of deontology suggests that he should confront James Young and stop the story to run. The code of ethics that should be followed by city editor is preamble (SPJ, 2014). This code of ethics states that it is duty of a person to seek truth and provide a comprehensive account of issue (Stanford, 2007). Honesty and diligence is the way to be followed by city editor. Utilitarianism theory in normative ethics is defined as reducing suffering and maximizing happiness (Utilitarianism, 2010). The virtue of Utilitarianism based on utility of promoting happiness. Irrespective of the negative impact of action on people, the main aim of utilitarianism is the maximization of good and balancing the greatest number of greatest happiness or the pleasure over pain (Wuslt, 2009).Utilitarianism moves beyond the range of individual’s interest and takes other interest into count. Utilitarianism places the locus of wrong and right solely depending upon the consequences of taking in to consideration of one action over other actions (Eggleston, 2003). Using the Utilitarianism theory, city editor should not reveal the blunder done by Young. The maximize good for city editor is to overlook the issues as it would help to benefit the newspaper. The main work at this situation is to run the story to save homeless shelter (Hilner, 2000). The proposed plant site for homeless shelter would not be possible if he reveals the truth. Therefore, maximize good is to ignore and neglect the issue. To save the plan for homeless shelter, ignoring the problem is the best possible solution. Minimizing the harm is the code of ethics that should be followed by city editor (Bennett-Woods, 2005). If any information gathered that can cause harm to the organization then there should be a way to minimize the harm. In this scenario, best solution is to hide the issue. Natural rights resemble the rights that are used to analyze the human nature both personally and socially (Clarke, 2013). According to this ethical frame, every individual has taken birth with equality of certain rights. According to natural rights, every individual has the right to speak and convey their issues (Philips, 2011). The natural rights are inalienable and universal for every individual. Individuals has right not to contingent upon the beliefs or laws of any government or culture.A natural right is considered as the authority of government and it is hard for them to dismiss it. In this scenario, city editor’s natural ethical right is to tell the truth about the issue so that there is no misrepresentation among the employees (Vissak, 2013). The natural right of city editor is to maintain ethical behavior and professionalism in workplace. This step can create fear among the employers to do the work truthfully and efficiently. City editor should clarify the situation to every journalist about the mistake made by James young. Finally interacting with James young about the mistake and realizing him about the professionalism that should be maintained. The code of ethics that should be followed by city editor needs to be justified (Stanford, 2013). The mistake of journalist is clarified. Exposing the unethical practices by James young and correcting them to set high standards. Decision The main goal of a journalist is to ensure that the citizens are provided with right important information which eventually allows them to create sufficient information about the situation of world. Ethics deals moral judgment of individuals about decisions that are right and wrong (Pasternak, 2012). It is responsible for every individual to expose the work of another individual if the work is carried on unethically (Green, 2011). City editor of a newspaper has some important situations that are needed to be handled. The main issue of city editor was to neglect the issue or expose the issue and try to correct it. All of the three ethical frameworks that have been analyzed should be used by city editor (Jones, 2013). In my opinion, Natural rights ethical framework theory would be best for city editor to follow. I preferred Natural rights because as it have be described that for every organization the best possible way of success is to maintain good ethical environment atmosphere in workplace. The right of city editor is to follow what is best for the future of the newspaper (Bredeson, 2011). I think that if James Young would have been overlooked regarding the issue then this issue would be done by other journalist. It is important for city editor to create professionalism in the workplace. The human right deployed by city editor to create ethical philosophy can affect the productivity and reputation of the company. Natural rights of every individual are to communicate and right to speak. A Natural right of city editor is to improve the newspaper in a best possible way (Garrett, 2005). Therefore, I suggest that a Natural right is the best ethical framework for city editor to follow. References BBC. (2014). Duty-Based Ethics. Retrieved from: . Bennett-Woods, D. (2005).
