Interdisciplinary Relationships Introduction The clinical nurse leadership anticipates establishment of nurses that can provide direct clinical leadership at the point of care, working towards delivering safe and evidence based service for quality outcome. Moreover, in the course of student preparations for their contemporary practice, it is essential to focus on their development of knowledge, skills and values related to interdisciplinary teamwork. The interdisciplinary perspective of the practice entails several core goals that help the student and practicing nurse in their profession as they deliver services to clients. Interdisciplinary relationships entail a sense of mutual coexistence among professionals of different disciplines that foster positive correlation within the working confines (Rigolosi, 2013). The need for harmonisation and collaboration amid the elements that provide primary care for the clients is essential in developing effectively working work relations within the practice. Interdisciplinary Relationships concepts Initially, the primary care practice entailed three essential elements of the application of interdisciplinary relationships within the nursing practice. These models included the parallel, sequential and shared models all of which include the working relations between a physician and a non-physician, who is a physician subordinate or nurse practitioner. The parallel model entailed a practice of service delivery in which the nurse practitioner or non-physician provider facilitated care services to the stable patients while the physician facilitated care for the medically complex patients (Rigolosi, 2013). Thus, none of the disciplines overlapped or supported the other in the working environment. Secondly, the sequential model of the interdisciplinary relationship entails the nurse or assistant physician performing the initial physical and historical examination of the patient. After gathering the initial findings over the patient, the physician takes responsibility for differential diagnosis and management. Additionally, the physician may take initial screen for complex patient cases. The shared model entails the professionals providing care for the patients on an alternating basis, without regarding the diagnosis or complexity of the care situation. These initial aspects of interdisciplinary relationship definition formulated the basis for establishment of additionally effective models of working. The latest models of the interdisciplinary relationship within the practice include collaborative practice models, teamwork system model and interdisciplinary teambuilding system model. The collaborative model is a concept that borrows from the team practice with a few modifications on the leadership. In collaborative practice, all the care providers and professionals from varied disciplines or roles collaborate to facilitate safe and high quality care with each professional working autonomously. The interdisciplinary teamwork system model contains further development of collaborative team practice. It applies various methods of team practice that facilitate a fluid system within the practice. The teamwork system incorporates the entire universe of professionals and non-professionals in the practice to create a team spirit with a rich group of people with the diversity in training and backgrounds. This diversity within the team system creates a unit that facilitates efficient service delivery to the clients. The interdisciplinary teambuilding model picks form the teamwork system model. It facilitates the creation and development of the interdisciplinary team within the primary care practice setting. The model advocates for the establishment of strong interdisciplinary team relations, with careful planning, commitment and continuous nurturing of the team members. This model further describes the essential components of team formation. Application to nursing leadership and management practice Within the nursing leadership and management practice, the interdisciplinary models are essential for establishing relations for efficient working and service delivery to the patients. The collaborative model as an extension of team practice focuses on modification of the leadership. The core working principle in the collaborative method is that all care providers work together irrespective of their professional standings. Thus, collaborative model is essential within the nursing leadership and management due to its components (Privado, Leite, Rangel, Chagas, Milman & Rodolfo, 2013). For instance, collaboration calls for joint communication and decision-making process with the intention of addressing the care needs of the client population. Therefore, this component of the model facilitates the leadership process within the nursing practice. The leadership learns the essence of effective communication practices in ensuring that the decision making process features all imperative aspects of care delivery for the health of the patients. Moreover, collaboration helps recognise the role of each professional within the practice. An effective leadership should incorporate all care providers as participants. Hence, with the interdisciplinary relationship model for collaboration, the nursing management and leadership learns the need for working in conjunction with other professionals, eliminating aspects of hierarchy; consequently, initiating a platform for equality within the working place. This gives confidence to all care providers irrespective of their professional alienation to deliver services to the patients accordingly. Collaborative model facilitates trust among the members of the nursing leadership and enhances mutual respect for the expertise of the members within the team (Privado, Leite, Rangel, Chagas, Milman & Rodolfo, 2013). The communication, which is parallel facilitates exchange of crucial information from leadership to patients and other practitioners and the converse; hence, creating efficient communication and proper planning with a deep knowledge base contributing to the decision making process of the nursing leadership. It also further cooperation and coordination of the leadership as well as increases optimism and shared responsibility within the nursing leadership and management. The interdisciplinary teamwork system model within the nursing leadership and management is an appropriate measure for incorporating the diversity within the healthcare service. In the teamwork system, the model outlines that the universe of health care professionals is extensive and necessitates the incorporation of all members aboard the leadership. For the nursing leadership and management, this model is essential in its application as it advocates for the leadership to work collaboratively as a team with all professionals in the practice (Rigolosi, 2013). The team should entail all aspects of diversity incorporating the professionals with varied training backgrounds and bring together their technical know-how in the process of managing the nursing profession course of delivering service. The nursing leadership adopts the team practice as part of its arsenal in healthcare profession creating interdependence among the nurses and other professionals in the service. The teamwork system will help the nursing leadership to define its mission and objectives and work collaboratively towards meeting these guiding decisions over the practice. Additionally, in interdisciplinary relationships, the model of interdisciplinary teambuilding is also indispensable in the nursing leadership and management. The nursing leadership adopts this model to promote its team building process, which will improve the factors of planning, commitment and nurturing of the nurses. The team should entail members for a varied skill base with several disciplines in consideration. This model of teambuilding helps the nursing leadership to define its goals ad roles of each player within the practice and the leadership team. Thus, when the leadership creates a clearly defined description of the tasks and roles of each of their members, it facilitates smooth working relations of the nursing practice, as well as, the interdisciplinary working relationships. Moreover, the leadership and decision-making processes of the team are imperative in nurse leadership, factors entailed within the confines of teambuilding processes, which the nursing leadership should adopt and apply accordingly. Moreover, applying the team-building concept in nursing leadership and management will promote aspects of communication within the team and other disciplines professionals and enhance coordination within the practice. In addition, the team-building factor facilitates aspects of conflict resolution, which is essential for the nursing leadership to practice in its endeavor to promote the working within the process of care delivery to the patients (Repko, 2012). Conflicts can extensively harm the progress of the nursing leadership, as well as, the relations between the nurses and other professionals in the health care process. Thus, establishing this interdisciplinary model of team building will foster the nursing management effectively and efficiently towards further successes in the health care practice. Implications for future evidence-based nursing practice The future of nursing is a factor embodied within the perspective of leading change and advancing healthcare towards better achievements. Nurse leadership and management are essential in the process of transforming the vision of the nursing profession to reality, a factor that will be possible with the incorporation of evidence-based nursing practices (Ellis, 2012). The requisites for transformation within the nursing practice demand the nurses to exhibit leadership capacities that contain high-level collaborative and team working skills within the system. Evidence based nursing is the key to ensuring the establishment of these high-level skills within the health care practice. For full partnership within the nursing leadership and practice, it requires that the team contain a unique set of skills derived from a diverse base of the interdisciplinary relationships within the healthcare practice. The nursing leadership needs to develop strategies necessary for the adoption of interdisciplinary aspects within the nursing practice in its endeavor to foster its mission and achieve its mission and objectives. The future will require the incorporation of nurses in the central mechanisms of patient safety and care programs as leading professionals. Additionally, the nursing leadership and organisation must see itself working with other disciplines and professionals in alliances derived to achieve quality care for the patients (Grossman, 2013). Additionally, the nurses will in future, with the help of evidence-based practice will uniformly speak with one accord as they unify the professionals and establish policies that advance achievement of quality and safe care practices. Policies are essential for the future of the nursing practice; thus, this is a foreseeable aspect of evidence-based nursing practice to the profession. Moreover, it also foresees the perspective of using the evidence–based practice to develop curricula and programs for study for the nurses and nurse students to advance their leadership skills and capacity to respond to challenges within the transforming health system (Linton & Prasun, 2013). Conclusion The evidence based nursing practice establishes the support that nurses need to establish patient-centered approaches to advance the excellence, access and value of care. Further, these establishments will translate into policy within the practice pushing the practice to a higher critical level. With these visions in the practice, the nurses should establish the political and practice partnerships that will influence its progress in the future. Thus, the interdisciplinary relationships are an essential aspect for the nursing practice in the endeavor to push the practice to greater heights of success.
