Like Robinson Crusoe and Man Friday, they delighted in such presents as strips of cloth, caps, towels, wooden crates, a wastebasket, a pitcher, a belt with a buckle, a penknife, and once…the Saints be praised, a wristwatch! With trembling fingers, Peter picked it up, took it to the village tinker who mended it and made it good as new.The timepiece served Nathan in good stead and all throughout secondary school and was ticking away still. Always, he recalled, whenever boy and old man went beachcombing, they would come home beaming and laden with gifts from the sea.

Later, when the old man died, Nathan lost interest in the trivial pursuit which he now deemed a silly, childish game one needed to outgrow. There are not many places on earth where the waters are so blue as on this island home of Nathan just off the coast of England, facing the sea. The blue ranges from indigo to ultramarine and cerulean. It would seem that the ocean was trying hard to capture faithfully the azure of the sky without quite succeeding.Nathan loved the island. He also loved the sea – everything in it and about it – even its briny scent and its storms.

Serena was like the sea, and of the sea. She could feel the fury of its waters during a storm as well as the peace when its winds have calmed down. Her name might as well be spelled “Sirena”, which in Spanish, meant “mermaid”, for she looked like a mermaid – with her long red wavy hair like seaweed, and pale complexion – faintly turning rosy like the inside of a conch shell after prolonged exposure to sun’s heat and stove fire. Her eyes were blue with greenish and bluish tints just like the ocean on clear days---and the thickest eyelashes ever!

She smiled rarely, but when she did, she revealed a splendid set of pearly white teeth and a devastating pair of dimples!
