Extract of sample "Human Resources Management and Development"

Personal Development Portfolio Prior to this M.A in HRM, I dint know much of what to expect, but coming to the end of the program, I have developed my competence and skills to fare with high standards of global arena in handling human resources. Knowing that as a human resource specialist, I must have to deal different things within me first in order to meet different demands with regards to this field and also in dealing with people with different interests and walks of life in order for me to have in depth knowledge in meeting the demands of the workforce to have a harmonious relationship between the administrators and the workforce. Though these things may be a little bit far from the real arena in my chosen field, I consider these things as an asset for such knowledge is an edge and a hint for me of what might happen in real life. Knowing that in Human Resources Management, the real essence of this practice is to ensure the welfare of the people who are working within an institution, it is important to know their needs and be in the footings of them to know how to handle such cases in the near future. Upon knowing these things, I should have to deal and live with the working people, to the extent of doing their tasks to be able to know their lives and how they are coping up with their demands and queries and putting my self into situation for me is somewhat a sort of preparation. With this, I am confident to say that these things honed me to become sensitive with the needs of the people especially, the workforce. The uncertainty before becomes a clear picture of what it is to be with this kind of field. Personal Development Portfolio 2 If we are to define Human Resource Management, according to McNamara (1999), it is defined as "The Human Resources Management (HRM) function includes a variety of activities, and key among them is deciding what staffing needs you have and whether to use independent contractors or hire employees to fill these needs, recruiting and training the best employees, ensuring they are high performers, dealing with performance issues, and ensuring your personnel and management practices conform to various regulations. Activities also include managing your approach to employee benefits and compensation, employee records and personnel policies" Upon analyzing the definition of HRM, it is evident that tremendous workloads and responsibilities are inclined with regards to this field thus; this should serve as guiding light for me. It is very important to know the definition of the field that you are into in order not to be swayed and to be guided accordingly as to what should I do in this field. I am now aware that variety of activities awaits me in doing tasks related to HRM. Dealing with the workforce doesn't end in recruiting key personnel that are qualified in a certain position but rather a continuous process of maintaining these individuals as well as ensuring their growth while doing tasks that would cater their needs. These things should be present in an HR specialist and these actual occurrences should beef-up my experience so they should not be taken for granted and that I was able to do and analyze while studying this field. The Use of theoretical modules is also important as they serve as references and guide to further enhance my knowledge in this kind of field. Personal Development Portfolio 3 While studying the modular approach of the program, my tutor Paul Smith is really a big help for me to understand different approaches to cope up with the demands of the said field. Of course, various exercises in these modules are aids that really enhanced my skill to the fullest. At first, it was quite hard but it becomes easier with every module after the other after determining the importance of Human Resource Management. My development and recruitment skills were also developed though I am engaged in a modular approach, which really helped me in determining the individuals who are capable for the job as well as how to maintain these people. Upon knowing that it is a complicated task to deal with human resources in a certain institution, perfection should be on the side of an HR specialist for dealing with different kinds of people is a job that needs tremendous effort in order to fulfill different tasks that is why I make it to a point to consider these things in order for me to be guided in doing my tasks in the future. Analysts suggested that in order for one to become a successful HR specialist, versatility in dealing with different personalities should be the major concern of this as most of the tasks in this kind of job that deals with welfare and development of human resources to ensure the productivity of a certain organization. Such cases are applicable to my future tasks as an HR specialist. Personal Development Portfolio 4 Included in my modular studies and actual experience is meeting the needs and rights of the workforce. By doing such, I became pragmatic and an activist, advocating the rights of the human assets of a certain institution. The machines can sometimes run institutions but there is no institution that can stand without human intervention. In this case, the care for human resources and proper management of it is essential, and knowing these things through various exercises is the one I like most. On hand trainings and the likes are the important details in enhancing my skills as hopeful HR specialist and with that; I consider every possibility that comes my way. I consider myself as a trainee of a battle waiting in the future which is the real practice of this profession. While dealing with different people, I also study different approaches and techniques that in a way would also cater the administration, which is the source of every organization or institution. I have to do things, which are essential to my experience in developing skills that a certain HR practitioner has to have. Developing the sense of being fair in every endeavor is also an important tool to further enhance my skill in human resources. While most of us think that modules do lack components as compared to the on hand trainings, I believe that it depends on how you deal and how you perform exercises is the thing that would enable one to be sensitive of what is happening around him. Personal Development Portfolio 5 Being a part of a certain union trade activity is also a skill that I have acquired after familiarizing myself with different things that are to be done in order to execute negotiation on conflicts that may arise in the near future which means that I have to further delve into law books and related literatures in order for me to know different things and approaches that would involve the management and the workers at the same time. In this case, the aid of module exercises and lectures really beefed-up my knowledge over the subject matter on how to deal with this challenges in managing human resources. Being a part of the negotiation table is also an advantage for me as I come to know different things concerning Human Resources. In such cases, being a member of the panel in arbitrating things to mend conflicts with human resources and the administration per se. While being in this scenario, one must know that you have to be in the middle of these conflicting parties knowing that there is always an access for these two parties to meet half way. If we are to compare these things with almost all of the conflicts that may arise in managing human resources, such cases are considered tip of an iceberg considering the fact that there are things to be considered in order for a certain HR specialist to become effective and successful. As an HR specialist, you must also know that the welfare of the workforce should be your outmost priority knowing that your job focuses on development of these people. These things are the issues that I have leaned to solve and hopefully a factor in my future undertakings as an HR specialist if I am to base with my module. Personal Development Portfolio 6 As an HR specialist, you must know that first you are there to be the representative of the Human Resources. With this, I consider that I should be after the betterment of the Human Resources and with this, I have to look into possibilities where I could get the sympathy of the workforce not for my benefit but for the interest of both the institution and the people working on it. Going back to the negotiating skills, I should learn that in negotiation, negotiating skill is important and is deemed as the most important element in handling conflicts involving human resources. As an HR specialist in the future, involving myself in trade union is important as an observer or a member of it perhaps is one of the important tasks to be done as I know that such things and cases should also be included in my training considering the fact that to know a certain problem or need, you have to dig deeper into situations like these and such situations are my parameters in determining factors on how will I be able to develop things that are essential for the development of Human Resources. Consulting in law books pertaining Human Resources, I find it interesting and important that I should familiarize myself with such laws considering the fact that there are instances in the future that would go beyond our reach and only law is the one to decide Personal Development Portfolio 7 There are also things that I remember as one of the lessons that I would use for my entire career in Human Resources management like attending hearings concerning labor matters, through the aid of labor law modules. I gave an intensive report pertaining to the subject matter such as industrial relations; it also gives insights on how employer should deal with its employee. An effective HR specialist should also know the strengths and waterloos of both employer and the employee and with this, HR specialists should have hints on how to deal with them because primarily it is one of the reasons of why Human Resource managers are there. In these cases, it is very important to know the attitudes of these people to come up with favorable decision that would benefit both the interest of the company and the Human resources. With this, I should familiarize myself with the things that I should do and the tasks that I should accomplish in line with the aforementioned instances. Before venturing into more complicated tasks, I should assure myself that I have gone through the ABC's of human resource management like those that are stated above. In such cases, I must first familiarize things and theories with regards to quandaries and concerns in dealing with the subject matter. My reports in Labor laws is a living testimony and evidence that I familiarize and have gone through thorough investigation with people specially, employees having difficulties in their jobs and encountering problems such as dismissal and the likes and these are some of many cases that I studied and looked upon in order to enhance my skills in Human Resource Management. Personal Development Portfolio 8 For me, knowing laws, which resolves conflicts in establishments and institution, is not just an asset but also an important tool in resolving different kinds of misunderstandings and miscommunication that comes along the way and is an inevitable cycle I a certain organization. Upon knowing these things, I also realize that I should develop sympathy towards the workforce (employee) and respect with trust with the administration (employee). However, most of the time, it is an established fact that these two have conflicting interests and it causes dilemma and most of the time clash between these two parties. Knowing these things, I should know that I have to develop an employer-employee relationship. The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) of the United States (2006) agreed that these factors is essential stating, " For pay personal services to quality as wages, there must be an employer-employee relationship." In acknowledging these facts, one would conclude that this responsibility lays to one person- a Human Resource specialist. These things should first and foremost be the concern of an HR specialist and these things are the determinant on how will I respond to these kind of problem in the future. In doing such things, it is important for me to have theoretical research and studies in order to relate myself in the process of determining the importance of the employer and employee in the operation of a certain enterprise, company, establishment or institution. To add to that, IRS further stated " The existence of employer-employee relationship under the usual common law rules will be determined, in doubtful case, by examination of the facts of each case." Personal Development Portfolio 9 Perhaps, the aforementioned premise is the most challenging as it pertains to law and it signals fairness and equality on both sides in which it is the expected duty of people who have something to do with Human Resource Management. In this case, one should have thorough knowledge and experience to call the shots in Human Resource Management. Motivating personnel is also a task to be done. There are a lot of things to be executed when you talk about this subject. As an HR specialist, you have to play like you are a sports coach wherein you are the one who directs and control the tempo of the game. Same thing with Human resource Management, you should know how these people who are working on an enterprise, company or an institution can work with high morale to perform their tasks that are to be done. Website cccd.edu (2006) indeed stated, "Human resources consists primarily of motivating employees to remain in an organization." This things should also be in my consideration knowing that you must have to value every people that is within the organization for they are part of the success of the organization and their performance is needed by it that is why the reason why they are hired. Ensuring schemes and plans that are to be done seem to be a very easy tasks but they are easy to be said than done and this notion would further push the HR specialist into the limit but this is a perfect test as to whether a certain HR specialist is capable of doing things that are beneficial to the workforce of the organization. In this case I have studied these things in my modules as well as applying them on people around me. Personal Development Portfolio 10 Ensuring the competency of a certain individual also an important especially in workforce to be able guarantee the productivity of the people that are being hired. Ensuring the worth of every centavo that an employer gives, one must know that the people that are being paid for should be productive in a way that their functions are served in order to execute the desired output of the organization's goal. Plans in order to ensure that the personnel within the organization are capable of doing their tasks, avoiding mediocrity and striving for excellence in order to ensure and execute plans and work for the goal of the company to be served. In this case, different approaches and techniques should be done to be sure that the value of each employee is excelling and not deteriorating. I have studied and scrutinized the examples that are stated in order for me to apply those things in the future. I have also learned that not the entire HR specialist does have this expertise on how to influence the people in improving their performance in the company and with this, I am trying to develop the sense of influence to uplift the morale of the workers and personnel that I would be able to handle in the future as an HR specialist. These things would not be possible without CIPD modules. I have also learned that such things should be present in order for an HR specialist to know if he is effective for the job. Hence, this thing should also be my parameter in my future endeavors. Personal Development Portfolio 11 To communicate well with the people around me, especially all of them who have something to do with my management in human resources I also have to develop my communication skills in order to ensure free flow of information, which is vital to the operation of a certain company. With this, several exercises should be done and studying different aspects pertaining communication is essential to develop inter-personal skills that is needed in all of the aspects of operation and management in order to avoid miscommunication which is more often than not a cause of delay, accidents and similar occurrences that contributes to poor quality of output or even failure to realize objective and goals. In this case Human Resources management has to know and be aware how to communicate well with the workforce in order not to delay and produce problems that may affect the company and the people working on it. Communication should always be present in order to ensure harmony, and proper execution of tasks and plans that are vital to the operation of a certain enterprise and institution. Analyzing such things is a huge advantage as most of the people do not have communication skills that is a major advantage in enhancing and developing confidence among the people while establishing positive working repertoire among the people that would contribute to a more harmonious working place that would resort into a good output. If we are to look into this one, communicating skill is vital and those are the skills that I am trying to establish knowing that communication skills is an important tool in Human Resource Management. Personal Development Portfolio 12 All in all, having the aforementioned qualities made me confident that I would be able to meet the challenges and demand that an HR Specialist encounters. These training further enhanced my personality and prepared me for future things hat are to come in line with my desired future career. This thing also encouraged me to further study and involve myself to trainings and seminars concerning matters in Human Resources management. I want to enhance every details of me and my skill with regards to human resource management knowing that it is very important and the role that I would play in the future is vital for it involves different things and tasks needed to deliver the goods in line with the demand with regards to the work of Human Resource Specialist. Of course, threats such as having graduates like the course that I took with limited opportunities really put my bid into malady. However, I am confident that such experience in both theoretical and actual can give me an advantage to other graduates.
