Construction of the building has been a very vital activity for a long time. As years progress, more and more buildings, and structures are built. However, a quality building or structure requires that the process of construction is of high quality in the sense that the thought directing the design process as well as the building products and materials, and the work is undertaken is of high quality. Therefore, an understanding of various aspects related to building construction is essential. This paper explores the aspect of site analysis or determining a site’s condition and constraints, the process and concepts of structural design, and the design of structures exposed to fire.

It explains various site surveys, explores the concepts and issues of contaminated land and remediation, geotechnical design and soil mechanics, and building on inner-city sites. The paper looks at the concepts related to structural design, including the principles of structural engineering and related calculations such as second-moment area, beams, cantilevers, truss and frames, force diagrams, bending moments, and shear force calculations as well as design methods like permissible stress design, and limit state design.

It looks at common structural materials and their properties, the aspects of building constructions such as foundation design, basement and retaining walls, ground floors, and above ground construction methods. The paper further touches on the concepts and objectives of fire safety in buildings, highlighting the relevant building regulations, fire development and resistance, the behavior of materials in the fire, and the performance of various structures in fire. Before the start of any construction, it is necessary to determine the conditions and constraints of a site.

This determination includes conducting site surveys, establishing land contamination and applying remediation measures, determining geotechnical characteristics and soil mechanics of the site, and exploring issues related to building on inner-city sites.
