Acid-Base Titration Exercise Your First Your Submitted The strongest antacid on a single-dose basis is the CVS Brand, and the weakest is Rennies. The basis for this observation is the number of HCl millimoles that reacted when the antacids were added to the original HCl solution. Calculating for the number of millimoles that reacted with HCl uses the formula n = M x V (“Acid-Base Titrations, n.d.). 2. On a by-weight basis, the strongest antacid is Mylanta, while the weakest is Tums.3. The titration involves the reaction NaOH + HCl  NaCl + H2O.

The pH of the solution when it becomes neutral is at pH 7.0. Bromothymol blue is the best indicator for this reaction because it has a pH range of 6.0 to 7.6, and pKIn at pH 7.0. At neutral pH, the color change is from yellow to blue (www.ch.ic.ac.uk, n.d.).4. If only a 0.1M sulfuric acid solution in the lab was available, the reaction will become 2NaOH (aq) + H2SO4 (aq)  Na2SO4 (aq) + H2O (l) (“Acid-Base Titrations”, n.d.) Titration of the excess acid will require twice the amount of 0.

05M NaOH because it will take two moles of the base to neutralize one mole of the acid, as based on the reaction. 5. Balanced chemical reaction: Al(OH)3 (aq) + 3HCl (aq)  AlCl3 (aq) + 3H2O (l)6. Maalox, Mylanta, Tums, CVS brand and Rennies were tested for their efficacy by acid-base titration using 0.1M HCl and 0.05M NaOH. The results showed that CVS brand is the strongest antacid in terms of single-dose basis, and Rennies is the weakest. On a by-weight basis, the results showed that Mylanta is the most effective antacid, while Tums is the least effective.
