Executive Summary Service marketing is no doubt about anticipating the needs of the customers and specifically addressing such needs of the customers. In so doing, the target market segments of the consumers need to be identified in order to understand the specific customer demands. Therefore, the customers are grouped into their socio – economic status, lifestyles and their family circumstances among others. In this report, the couples were grouped into the visible achievers (couple B) and the young optimism (couple A). The needs of the couples were effectively met according to their market segmentation. The report therefore sets out to explore and justify how the needs of the couples were met and in regard to the market segment that they belong to with greater emphasis laid on why the excursions were set based on the 7ps marketing mix. Recommendations are however given as to what could be done to improve in meeting the needs of both market segments. To begin with, itineraries are entrusted with the job of making tourists adapt to the new environment by selecting attractions sites that the tourists will enjoy touring and collaborating with the tourists to make their visits worthwhile. Couple A and B excursions were purely based on the 7 ps of marketing with their needs varied in regards to the experiences that they sought in the holiday (Inbakaran & Jackson 2005). Couple A, sought a romantic experience with couple B, seeking a luxurious holiday. From the report, the needs of the couple’s were meet in accordance with specific needs of the couples, that is couple A, young optimism needs and couple B, visible achievers needs. But nonetheless, the experiences of both couples were met. 13 References 14 Trip advisor 2012f. Torcello Island – reviews, photos. To begin with, the city is breathtaking and truly romantic especially for couples. The city rests on stilts and consists of maze of islands, brides which totals to over 400 and also canals. In all the six quarters, that is; Santa Croce, San Polo, Cannareio, Castello, San Marco and Dorsoduro, one can easily access Venice. Lack of motor vehicle in the city also makes one to have a pleasant and unique experience in Venice as it is the only city in the world where it is purely a pedestrian city. Gothic, Renaissance and Byzantine styles which can be traced back to the 15th century dominates the landmarks in Venice. In this itinerary, we are going to consider two kinds of couples. One couple is old or otherwise visible achievers and they would like to spend their holiday in exquisite places where they will enjoy top of class services offered in Venice. Throughout Venice, they aim at educational trips and ones in a while activities that will keep them busy. The other couple is young or otherwise young optimism and they have come to spend their honeymoon at Venice. In this trip they are to be cautious on their budget hence in planning for their excursions, we are supposed to try and limit where they go and focus on the places that will not need a lot of spending. In choosing the places they are to go, the itinerary has incorporated activities that will evolve around romantic sites and the places they are to go should be more of adventure rather than educational. To make sure that both couples do not regret on their visit to Venice, the itinerary is going to ensure that they visit Venice’s major attractions some of them being the Grand Canal, the museums that have a great attachment to Venice history and not forgetting St Mark’s and its environs, Veneto hills and the major Islands surrounding Venice. In this report we are also going to consider the 7 P’s used in marketing giving a justification as to why the places were chosen for either couple A or couple B. In the conclusion, the report incorporates recommendations on the areas discussed. Detailed Itinerary for Couple A Day 1: Arrival at Venice The hostel that was chosen for the couple was just 350 metres from the airport hence the place was accessible and less time was spent in travelling considering they might have been tired from the long journey. A hostel was chosen for them because they are a young couple and they were cautious on the way they had to spend their finances in Venice. Considering that they are strict on their spending, the hostel was suitable in terms of the pricing of accommodation and the location of this place was just close to a train station which they would use to travel the following day. The packaging of the services in the hostel was nice because they offered transport facilities to come to the hostel. This hostel is private thus it would give private space for the young couple. The people employed as staff in the hotel are hospitable making the couple feel relaxed. Day 2: Visit St Mark’s Since the couple prefers spending most of their time on their own, they are to go to places that are not densely populated. In this day they are going to spend most of their day at St. Marks and its environs. Venice is known to be the home of the world’s most beautiful church, the St Marks basilica otherwise known as Basilica di San Marco (Hotels.com 2012b). The couple can get to this place by using the Rialto Bridge by means of a Vapporetta as any lunch served while travelling using this means of transport is very romantic. At this place, the couple can also find some quiet time together where they can sit in the piazza and have some conversation. Cadillac hotel was chosen as it offers beach facilities such as swimming and different game activities. By joining other couples in the hotel, they can enjoy some fun at the beach and thereafter have dinner in the same venue. Using the P’s in marketing the prices of the means of transport are cheap but on the other hand the services offered suite the consumer. The hotel chosen was affordable as the prices were flexible. The services the hotel offered were friendly and some of them were free thus promoting the hotel. The dinner served was also friendly enabling the couple consider spending their evening there. Day 3: Visit to Burano Island The reason for making the couple visit this place is because the scenario offers many romantic places not forgetting the romantic things they can do here. This place is also known as the little piece of Italian magic and with no doubt it offers the couple a great experience. The couple will have a chance to admire the houses that are beautifully decorated and at this time they can spend time at a church in Burano called San Martino church that has a leaning bell tower, they can spare some time in buying lace souvenir. Also at this place they can explore parts of Murano area that is just near Burano Island (Carto 06 2012). The hotel chosen for this couple is Hotel Antica Dogana as it is located in an ancient Venetian Lagoon. Here the couple can admire the sun set the Venetian way as they breathe the fresh air the island offers (Trip advisor 2012h) .Also at this place, the couple can observe the islands as they relax after taking dinner. Using the P’s in marketing, the vaporetto is used because it serves as an efficient means of transport and the price is affordable. Also the time spent to reach Burano Island is reduced by using a Vapporetta (Motoscafive 2012). The hotel chosen is in a place that offers the state of the art technology and the space in this hotel is modern and it offers affordable food and services. The dinning services are elegant hence the couple will experience sophistication. At this hotel they will view the surrounding environment and as a promotion strategy, the hotel offers facial treatment for its visitors. Day 4: Visit the Doge’s Palace The couple is going to visit Doge’s palace, the Bridge of Sighs and take a walk to Rialto Bridge to buy glass ware. The couple will use a gondola ride for two to reach the Doge’s palace and by using this means of transport, they will pass beautiful yet exquisite buildings that Venice offers, through this they can tour the Rialto bridge where they are going to do some shopping and take some glass gifts to couple B who they are intending to visit and have dinner with them as they spend the night in the same hotel with couple B. While at the Doge’s palace, they can follow the footsteps of Casanova as this is seen to be a romantic place as it is the venue that the one of the most famous lovers Casanova was sipping wine before he met his lover (Partner 2012a). The island of Lido is chosen as it is near the hotel in which they are going to spend their night. The place is breathtaking and it will be used to view the sun setting. By using the P’s in marketing, they choose to use a gondola as its travelling prices are cheap. They also decide to shop for glass at the Rialto Bridge because since that is the main place where they are crafted; the glass items will be cheap. Since they have been invited for a night out by the old couple, their choice is determined by the price and the place in which it is located .Taking onto consideration that the old couple want to stay in a luxurious suites in Venice, the products and services offered in this hotel are top class hence can suite their lifestyle. In this hotel despite being costly to couple A, they will have a chance to experience the kind of service offered meaning that if they are satisfied with the services in this hotel, they can recommend other couples who unlike them will not be working on a fixed budget. This in other words is a way of product promotion. Day 5: Visit Torcella Island Torcello Island is chosen for this couple as it is far away from the town hence they can have a relaxed moment as most of the places are silent with no much activity going on. In their visit, they will be spoilt by the beautiful sceneries of old churches. Here the couple will walk at a small canal and pass through Ponte del Diavalo otherwise known as the Devil’s bridge (Trip advisor 2012f). The Torcello Island is said to be much greener than any other parts in the Venice city. Here the couple can take a lazy walk through the open fields and also take photos of vineyards and wild flowers. The couple will have their lunch around the Byzantine church as this place is believed to have little restaurants that offer great lunch. Packaging and pricing are factors that are considered here as the restaurants they are o choose are cheap yet they offer quality food. The day is not spent in any other place so as to cater for the next day’s expenses. Hotel Canal Grande is chosen for the couple as the place has enough space, is cosy and romantic offering a good package for the couple (Trip advisor 2012c). Day 6: Visit the Lido beach The Lido beach is located not far from Venice hence it is easier for the couple to use a Vaporetto to reach to this site (Hotels.com 2012c). The beach is free hence no money is spent on the entrance. Lido beach offers white sandy beaches where there is plenty of sunshine as one swims through the blue waters. This beach has a lot of friendly services as it has a self serve area where the couple can grab a cheap meal as they enjoy beach activities such as scuba diving and surfing. Volley ball is a game that the couple should engage in as it will make their extra energy run high. Since the young couples are optimistic about life, they can get a chance to compete in boat riding. The couple can then spend their night on the rental huts and this can also be an adventure. In the P’s of marketing, the couple chooses to go to this beach as it is free hence no price to be considered. The package the beach has to offer is in various types and the pricing of the foods and drinks are affordable. Day 7: Shopping This day will be spent by the couple in shopping. In this while checking on the budget, they will do most of their shopping at Via Garibaldi market as it offers various products from household goods to clothes to fresh foods. In choosing this market, we considered the P of pricing as the goods are cheap, place as the location of the market is convenient from where they were residing and product because the market was offering various product that would be taken back home as souvenirs. Day 8: Departure from Venice The couple had to leave early in the morning because they have exhausted their money and trips made in the morning are much cheaper as those made during the day hence considering the P for price. Detailed Itinerary for Couple B Day 1: Arriving at Venice The couple are booked in San Clemente Palace Hotel & Resort which is located approximately 45 minutes from the San Macro Airport. The hotel is a five star hotel and therefore the hotel management is to privately cater for the couple’s transportation to the hotel. The decision to book the couple in San Clemente Palace Hotel & Resort is largely based on the convenience of the hotel to the airport and thus the P of place. San Clemente Palace Hotel & Resort is not far away from the airport and thus the elderly couple will have plenty of time to relax awaiting the excursions of the following day (Hotels.com 2012b). On the first day, the couple spent most of the evening relaxing in the room since they arrived at 5 p.m. They were booked in an executive room overlooking the lagoon where the couple could relax while still taking in the breathtaking sites of Venice and hence the consideration of the P of product (Five star alliance.com 2012). The hotel has room service and meals were served to the couple at their convenient time instead of rushing them to have dinner at the hotels specified time. The main interest here is a holiday experience and activities have to take place at the couple’s luxurious time. Being a five star hotel, the services in the hotel are typical of the visible achievement segment that is the hotel shuttle boat services and room service among others. Couple B are mainly interested in a luxury holiday and the best consideration for a luxury holiday is San Clemente Palace Hotel & Resort which is located in a private island, and there are therefore assured of an ideal destination and the best value for their money. The consideration for the P of price comes in choosing a place that can give couple B an experience that they deserve regardless of the cost. Day 2; Visiting San Mark’s The day’s activities were justified by the P of packaging, place and price and people. The P of packaging is first of all justified through allowing the couple to sample the services of the hotel. For instance, visiting the fitness area of the hotel, taking breakfast at Gli Arazzi Breakfast rooms, and visiting St. Mark’s Square during the first excursion. Packaging of the couple’s luxurious experience is delivered through allowing the couple to first of all sample the immediate attractions before exploring other places. The hotel where the couple took their lunch and the means through which they are travelling via a private water taxi are justifications for the P of price. The couple are interested in a luxury holiday and therefore taking public means of transport would not be appropriate. The P of place is also put into consideration for all the sites that the couple visited were next to each other. St. Mark’s Square is 12 minutes away from San Clemente Palace Hotel & Resort. In addition, physical fitness facilities and breakfast were served at the hotel. The couple are not set to explore more of Venice. The couple had to rely on the tour guide to take them through the attractions in St. Mark’s Square justifying the P of people. Day 3: Murano Islands and the glass Museum The excursions in day 3 were purely educative with the couple viewing for the first time how glass is sculptured. This justified the P of process. The visible achievers are people who like plans to be carried out ads they have set and they are very keen on fine details for instance punctuality and perfection hence experiencing how glass is sculptured gives the couple the opportunity to see the sculptor attending to keen details to make fine glass sculptors. In addition, the couple interacted with the tour guide and the people who were sculpturing the glass and hence the P of people. The P of place is justified through visiting Murano which unlike other tourist’s attractions sites in Venice (Nile guide 2012), is not densely populated as a tourist site as compared to other attraction sites for instance, the Grand Canal. The P of packaging comes in through the way the couple visit sites which are close to one another. For instance, they took their lunch in Locanda Conterie (Hotels.com 2012b) and the afternoon was well spent by visiting adjacent sites to the hotel; that is the Glass Museum and Palazzo Guistinian. The excursions for the day were also selected with the P of product in mind where the couple had the opportunity to buy glass sculptors as artefacts to take back home from Venice. Day 4: Visit to Doge’s Palace and Rialto Bridge The excursions were planned with the main motive of allowing couple B to spend some time together while relaxing. The day involved less travel for the couple were free most of the afternoon to enjoy the beaches of Venice and hence the P of promotion. The activity for instance beach walks in the afternoon were set to give the couple an experience they can always relate to whenever they want to travel to city of Venice (Olimpia 2010). P of product is integrated in day 4 excursions through allowing the couple some time to relax at the beach and hence, the experience that the couple got while watching the sun set at Island of Lido was breathtaking and different from the one that they had been used at of travelling since they visited Venice. P for people is justified through the interaction of the couple with the tour guide to Doge’s place. The tour to Doge’s Palace was purely educative with educating the couple of when the palace was built as they toured the interior of the opulence of the palace. The guide was also instrumental in educating the couple that the palace was first inhabited by the supreme authority of the Repubblica of Venezuela who was commonly referred to as Doge and that’s where the palace coined its now famous name, the Doge’s place (Partner 2012b). The interaction of the guide who was very instructional on the tour justifies the P of people. Day 5: Visit to Teatro La Fenice The excursion at day 5 was an integration of Ps for product, people, place, and price and process. Through touring Teatro La Fenice, the couple was able to visit a significant opera house in Venice which offered them the opportunity to learn the history of the theatre. This justified the P of price for the experience that they got at the theatre was worth the value of their money. In addition, visible achiever segment consists of people who like to learn new ideas on a daily basis. The P for people is justified through the couple’s interaction with the tour guide for instance in the audio tours and the guided tours with cocktails (Trip advisor 2012h). P for product to the couple involves the package of not only touring the various attractions sites in Venice, but also touring attractions sites that are captivating and educative. P for process in day 5 is delivered by delivering the needs of the visible achiever segment, whereby the tour was educative and the couple had tickets to the theatre. They were indulged in not only a breath taking and among a famous place in Venice but also a place where they learnt the history of the theatre (Trip advisor 2012e). P for place is justifiable for Teatro La Fenice is a place that offered the couple not only some theatre experiences but also a nice way to relax on their last days in Venice (Trip advisor 2012h). Day 6: Shopping The day’s excursions involved experiencing Venice and shopping in major places. The couple had plenty of time to shop for artefacts that they would want to take with them in order for them to remember their experience in Venice. P for price is justified by the couple visiting the best shops in Venice and therefore they can buy the best products in Venice and also staying at one of the best five stars hotel in Venice; Western Europa and Regina Hotel. P for place is justified by dining at Centurion Palace Hotel which is near Peggy Guggenheim Museum and thus less wastage of time for the couple. Day 7: Spend the Day at Western Europa and Regina Hotel P for place justifications comes from the hotel offering a mix of traditional classiness as well as a sense of modernity. The hotel is sophisticated and offers very elegance hospitality, justifying the P of price. It is also near Venice Marco polo Airport where the couple is to depart from Venice the following day, thus justification of P for place. Dinner for the couple was served at La Cusina where the coupled enjoyed their last night in Venice together and thus justifying the P of product (Venice explorer.net 2012). Day 8: Departure from Venice Depart from Venice via Marco polo airport, the couple were taken to the airport through a hired private water bus and hence the consideration of P of price. Recommendations The five star hotels should implement new packages for couple on honeymoon. For example, couple A which was on honeymoon spent most of their stay in 3 stars hotels unlike couple B which had the advantage of finances. The five stars hotels show offer cheaper packages to couples who want to enjoy their romantic stay in Venice but are disadvantaged by finances. Couple B excursions were primarily educative and were less concerned with the P of price as long as there were getting values for their money. Hence, travel agencies in Venice should organize other exciting experiences that couple B are to indulge in, for instance teaching couples how to boat ride. Conclusion Modern day tourism environment is very turbulent and competitive and thus characterized by having many stakeholders in the business among them the travel agencies who are left with many responsibilities. References Trip advisor 2012f. Torcello Island – reviews, photos.
