Disaster Recovery Plan In articulating a disaster recovery plan there are a number of notable elements that go into the production and development of the main outlining features. This specific essay details the disaster recovery plan for a small neighborhood veterinary clinic during, after, and before a hurricane. Some of the distinguishing features within this clinic are that it provides services for dogs and cats only. These services include office visits, surgery, hospitalization, and boarding.

The clinic is located in a geographical region that is regularly threatened by hurricanes. The one-story building is constructed of cement block, with no windows, and meets all hurricane-related building codes. The clinic does accept animals for boarding when a hurricane threatens, as public shelters for local residents do not allow animals. When developing a sound disaster recovery plan, there are systematic measures an organization must take to accomplish this task. One of the first such method is developing preventative measures that function to aid the organization ahead of time.

In terms of the veterinary clinic adequate preventative measures include ensuring that the building is current with hurricane protection standards and that it is properly insured. While an organization cannot prevent a hurricane from occurring that can prevent further structural damage from occurring by making sure that these building codes are up to contemporary standards, and are insured in case of a potential failure. Special consideration must be given to the nature of the business as housing animals.

Proper preventative measures will ensure that the structure is either strong enough to withstand a hurricane, and if it is deemed not, that there will be adequate measures developed for animal transportation. In these regards, the disaster care plan will ensure that the animals can be temporarily moved to a veterinary clinic outside the immediate county through the aid of a UHAUL truck. The next step that must be taken is to ensure proper detective measures are taken. While preventative measures function to ensure that the animals and structural considerations are properly attended to, in this instance there will remain detective measures that go beyond these elements.

In these respects, medicinal items, including syringes and other such potentially hazardous material need to be organized in such a way that they can be readily transported in the case of a hurricane. This element also falls under preventative measures, as the categorization of this material shall be done currently, well in advance of the emergence of hurricane warnings. The final element within this disaster recovery plan relates to corrective measures. These measures are placed into effect after the hurricane as passed through the area.

While it’s not possible to entirely plan for these measures general outlines must be put in place. One of the primary outlines concerns where the animals will be sheltered in case of permanent structural damage as a result of the hurricane. In these regards, the owners must be informed that in-case of emergency or structural damage they will be ultimately responsible for housing their sick animals. In addition, proper bureaucratic pathways must be designed such that insurance money and new construction can be handled in an efficient way.

In conclusion, it’s clear that the disaster recovery plan for the veterinarian clinic involves three main elements. These elements include preventative measures, detective measures, and corrective measures. In adhering to this recovery plan, the veterinary clinic can greatly reduce complications that would result from inadequate planning.
