Smartphones v. Computers Technological advancements in transport, communication, and production of goods and services hasrevolutionized the world. Airplanes, trains, and automobiles are examples of technologies that have it easy for people to move traverse continents in a short time. Communication has been made faster and easier compared to the old times. Technology has made it possible for people in two different parts of the world to talk in real time without any significant problems. Communication technologies include smartphones, internet, computer (include desktop and laptops), social networks, television, and radio. The paper contrasts smartphones and laptops with the aim of understanding their impact on the society. It highlights the functions that come with both technologies. Smartphones Smartphones is a computing device that makes it very easy to obtain connectivity in any area that is covered by a signal (Campbell-Kelly and Garcia-Swartz 143). Smartphones are equipped with 4G and 3G networks that allow users to access the internet at high speeds. The availability of signals in most parts of the country allows smartphone users to obtain Internet connectivity at any time. Social media, education material, videos, and music are the things that make connectivity a big deal for many people. Smartphones have positively influenced the society by increasing access to information. The internet contains hordes of information, which can be harmful or beneficial. It is clear that connectivity facilitates entertainment, socializing, and education. Smartphones have been equipped with the technology needed to gain connectivity everywhere at a cost. Since the start of time, the human race has been trying to find ways to store and move with information without major challenges. Advanced smartphones have been equipped with large storage, which is also supplemented by the external storage disk. Smartphone users have the habit of downloading or transferring significant content. It makes it easy to access information without connectivity. Most people use large storage in smartphones for pictures, music, video, and messages. The convenience that comes with large storage in smartphones explains the high clamor for smartphones in the society. The built-in storage in most smartphones falls within the range of 8GB to 64GB. The large storage has made it easy to access, transfer, and share all types of data. It should be noted that the storage range provided is enough for most people. The relatively high portability that comes with smartphones makes it easy and convenient to carry it everywhere. They are designed and manufactured for easier handling and carrying. They are a bit bigger than standard mobile phones. Portability makes it easy to move with smartphones, which serve as personal data assistants, video and music player, and a connectivity tool. Smartphone manufacturers use ergonomics helps in designing smartphones that are easy to hold and use. Most of the phones have designed to be slim and light to fit into the pocket easily. The essence is to make it every easy to move around with the phone with minimal discomfort. Laptops (Computer) Laptops have been designed to obtain connectivity through wireless signals and adapter cables. Many people rely on their laptops to access the internet for different reasons. However, is paramount to note that laptops lack the equipment needed to gain connectivity everywhere that is covered by a cell tower. It is more convenient to obtain connectivity using smartphones than laptops. At the same time, one should understand that technological advancements and need for internet connectivity have prompted organizations and governments to set up Wi-Fi hotspots in most parts of the city (Campbell-Kelly and Garcia-Swartz 150). Thus, users find it convenient to gain connectivity even without 4G and 3G data plans. The have it easy to access the internet, which has become a source of education, and entertainment. Laptop hard drives have already exceeded one terabyte. The storage capacity in laptops continues to increase. Most computers come with a storage capacity of around 250GB. This is more than enough for most users. Typically, people use computers to store music, video, documents, and backup messages. It is very convenient for businesses and professionals who handle a lot of data. Computers are used to store customer and market research data, which can be used to produce graphs. The graphs are used to show the trend in product sales, which helps in determining what should be done to improve. The large storage capacity makes it computers the preferred choice when it comes to handling large volumes that involve businesses and governments. It has made filing easy because the stored information can be easily accessed by typing a keyword. The manufacturer of laptops was in response to the demand for portable computers. Desktop computers are very difficult to move around because of their size. They are too big and depend on a fixed power source. Laptops have been designed to be light and easy to carry. Backpacks ensure the safety of laptops when one is on the move. However, the laptops that have equipped with large screens can be relatively difficult to carry. It is relatively less difficult to carry a laptop than it is to carry a smartphone. In addition, laptops demand special backpacks that can minimize damage when one is moving. Regardless, the portability that comes with laptops has been a real asset for both professionals and students. This is because laptops allow one to enjoy all the benefits that come with a desktop computer while on the move. Conclusion Computers and smartphones have positively influenced communication in the society by making relatively easy to obtain, store and process data. Laptops rely on wireless networks and WLAN networks to access the internet. Smartphones are equipped with 4G and 3G networks, which make it possible to obtain connectivity in any location covered by the cell tower signal. Storage is an asset for both computer and smartphone users. However, the computer users have access to bigger storage. The production of portable smartphones and computers has made it easy for people to do accomplish many tasks while on the move. Smartphones are more portable than laptops because they are smaller and lighter. The current trend is that computers continue to get smaller without losing their computing capabilities while smartphones are being equipped with additional computing capabilities.
