Should Business Hire Undocumented Workers? Affiliation Should Business Hire Undocumented Workers Illegal immigration in the United States is the biggest social problem because there are about 12 to 20 million illegal immigrants. The issue of illegal immigration has caused both legal and ethical issues to arise because employers are willing to employ the immigrants even without proper documentation. In that, the legal issues that arise include that the employers are willing to accept documents that are not legal in order to get cheap labor from the immigrants. This is because they are the only individuals who are willing to do jobs that the Americans would not accept. Therefore, by accepting the undocumented immigrants the employer is violating the law, as they should always ensure that all employees are properly documented (Carroll & Buchholtz, 2010, p. 633). The ethical issues that arise in this issue is that is not morally right to employ people in the who use false names and social security numbers in order to get employment. Moreover, the employer knows that the undocumented immigrants are using false documents, and yet they are willing to employ them. The government requires the employer to use E-Verify to see whether the employee is in the database; however, there are some loopholes as proof of legal status is being passed using false names, which is unethical. 2. Illegal immigration is primarily a social issue because the more the number of undocumented immigrants there are the more the population. In that, today with over 20 million immigrants there is a need to ensure that is sufficient employment in order for them to cater for their family’s needs. Additionally, education is significant for those immigrants who have brought along their children. However, these are a major issue because the undocumented immigrants do not pay any taxes that are required to cater for the public schools. For that reason, the United States citizens are feeling that immigrants should not be using their resources. Additionally, they require medical attention and cover and because most of them have social security numbers that are bogus, it means that they cannot have a medical cover. Hence, placing the burden on the government to ensure that they get quality health care, which legally they should not have access to, as they do not pay taxes. 3. Corporate social responsibility is the obligation of the corporation to maximize the good and to minimize the bad effects the organization has on the stakeholder’s diverse interests. In relation to businesses hiring undocumented worked, it is a corporate social responsible when looked at in the viewpoint of the pyramid of corporate social responsibility (Carroll & Buchholtz, 2010, p. 635). This is because the act of hiring undocumented workers is illegal because consumers must ensure that their business practices obey regulation in order to protect consumers who rely on their products. Because in case the organization is penalized or shut down due to illegal practices the consumers and invested stand to lose profits. Hiring undocumented workers is not economical in the sense that although the employees are paid they do not pay taxes; hence, do not put any input in the economy of the United States. It is not ethical to employ undocumented workers as the conditions they work in are not conducive same as the wages they b get. Additionally, hiring undocumented workers is not philanthropic because the employer does not care about the welfare of such employees as they given jobs that no one else is willing to do. 4. Various point of views has been layout when it comes to hiring illegal immigrants. Those in support of hiring illegal immigrants state that through proper legislation the illegal immigrants can continue working in the United States because they provide cheap labor. Additionally, the business argue that in case the illegal immigrants are deported, and they were working in restaurants, for example, the prices of food will increase, which is unethical. For that reason, allowing them to work in the United States will help in some areas as they take jobs some will not. However, those people who argue against illegal immigrants being employed argue that the illegal immigrants are getting a free ride when it comes to paying taxes, which is both ethically and legally wrong. Additionally, there is increased crime rate putting the lives of the American citizens in danger. In my opinion, I support the argument against employment of illegal immigrants because due to the cheap labor they provide they take away the jobs that could be done by Americans. Additionally, it is the duty of very citizen using resources to pay taxes and for them they do not get to do that as they use false identification, which is legally and ethically wrong. 5. It has been argued that the driving force of illegal immigrants being in the United States is the willingness of the employer to employ the undocumented illegal immigrants. Some employers even risk being caught by the authorities when they are trying to sneak in the illegal immigrants in the country to work for them. This has been established to be unethical act and employers who hire the aliens are said to be immoral and unethical. Three ethics principles are violated in hiring undocumented immigrants, and they include first, the principle of rights where the illegal immigrants do not have the right to work in the United States. Hence, them being in the country illegally encroaches the legal rights of the United States citizens in the form of crowding in the education system, increased taxes, social services and the right to safety. Secondly, there is the principle of justice which us all about fairness where it is not fair for the United States citizens that they have to pay higher taxes because of increased population of people. Additionally, it is not fair that for those individuals who are trying to cross the border using the legal process are being taken over by those who are crossing the border illegally. Lastly, there is the principle of utilitarianism that supports what is said to be useful or practical because some business group thinks that hiring illegal immigrants is convenient, and when the illegal immigrants take jobs others will not then it lowers the prices of goods for the consumers. 6. E-verify is a new electronic system that allows the businesses to verify whether their employees are in the country legally. This has been an easy way of ensuring that the businesses comply with the law, as the illegal immigrants do not have to provide hard copies of their documentation (Carroll & Buchholtz, 2010, p. 636). Therefore, it is correct to say that E-Verify are making it easy for the business to comply with the law, and there is no excuse for, not complying. However, although the businesses are trying to ensure that all employees are documented, it has become easier for the illegal immigrants to use false identification. This indicates that there are some loopholes in the system that the government should go over. 7. The Mohawk decision will cause many consequences when it comes to hiring illegal immigrants. This is because after the court’s decision the company paid a lot of money to its former and current employers for depressing the wages due to the increased number of immigrants. As a result, of the court’s decision many states have enacted statutes that make it a crime to hire illegal immigrant’s penalties adding up to the business losing their licenses and others being closed. The decision in Mohawk’s case to some extent will deter hiring an illegal immigrant; however, it is upon the government to ensure to work hard towards ensuring that they do not enter the country. 8. In my opinion, the new Arizona law is excessive because it will increase discrimination in the area. Additionally, people will feel as if they are being colonized again as they have to carry proof of legal status all the time even when they are in the market. States think they need to take action because the federal government is reluctant in coming up with measures to reduce the number of immigrants coming in the United States. This is because the number is increasing each day meaning the citizens are paying more for the goods in order to ensure that the government provides the basic needs of the people.
